Gamma and X
The star Omega-Alpha was too close and it was hard for
the two friends Gamma and X not to get lost in the desert on the planet Teta.
Our heroes were friends since Gamma’s mother introduced her to X, the two
mothers had met in the maternity ward, and from that day on the two of them
were inseparable.
Through the years Gamma turned into a beauty with
unruly green locks and smooth white skin. X couldn’t help noticing that and
fell madly in love with her back in his yearly teenage years. Unfortunately he
wasn’t the only one that noticed that and she became one of the popular girls
in school. X, unlike his best friend, was plain and normal. He had waist-long
greenish-blue hair and scaly gray skin like on a reptile. Even his eyes were as
plain as him – brown. Almost the same as the earthlings. Gammas eyes, her three
eyes, were filled with all the shades of red and pink and had a little yellow
star in her left iris.
-I don’t know where we are. - said Gamma and looked
around.
-According to my calculations-started X, and took out
one of his personally made gadget from his pocket- after ten minutes we will
reach Georas hide-out.
And again, Gamma was not dressed properly - thick
shirt with long sleeves, long pants and boots with high heels. On Kliora, their
home planet, it was eternal winter and although X had warned her to wear
appropriate clothes, she did not listened to him. She always dressed in the
latest fashion and never cared if it was comfortable.
Ten minutes later a small wooden house that could
hardly gather two people appeared in front of them. That was supposed to be the
place. Gamma frowned and slapped her best friend on the back of his head.
-You’ve messed up again, haven’t you?-she shouted at
him.
-I haven’t.- he growled and again looked at the little
gadget that was showing a top view of the surroundings and a big square that
was supposed to be a house. But there was something strange about the square –
it was transparent.-It must be hidden underground.- he continued and walked towards
the little wooden house without waiting for his friend. She, of course,
followed him. It was no surprise, that everyone knew she was the biggest
adventurer on Kliora and the nearest 5 planets.
Maybe you’ve started to wonder what is going on. Who
these characters are? What are they doing? Who is telling the story? I am Geko,
a frog from planet Earth. When Gamma and X were on a mission on my home planet,
I got in their ship. I jumped on one of X’s inventions by accident and thanks
to it I started to talk. From that day on I’ve been their mascot, always with
them. Normally, I sit on X’s shoulder. He feeds me and takes care of me. This
was a good enough reason for me to get attached to him.
My friends, as you already know, live on Kliora, the
last planet of the Lota constellation. After they had finished school they
decided to solve mysteries and different cases. That day, for example, we were
searching for a criminal that had been missing for years.
The small house was empty, except for a few mops, brushes
and brooms. Gamma was very angry and ready to hit X again. Unlike the previous place
that we had passed this house was clean and tidy.
-Didn’t I told you messed up!?-scolded him Gamma.
There wasn’t enough space for her to raise her hand and hit him. She wasn’t in
a good mood and because of the heat she was tired. X on the other hand was smarter.
He left with warm clothes and changed into a T-shirt, jeans and comfortable
shoes on the way to Teta. He ignored Gamma as he looked around for something
that could help us.
-Don’t shout at X.-I said-You know that without him we
wouldn’t have discovered where the criminal is hiding.
When I jumped on one of the brooms it bent a little
downwards. We heard a cracking and everything started to shake.
-It wasn’t me. I didn’t do anything!-I stumbled. The
ground moved and slowly we started to fall down.
-You didn’t break anything.- X calmed me -You found
out how to get to Geora.
We stopped moving and found ourselves in a huge hall
that had nothing except one door at the end of a path covered in red carpet.
The room that the carpet led to was smaller and luxurious. Red carpet, golden
ornaments, golden candelabras and red curtains on the windows that projected
virtual images of green forests, wheat fields and snowy mountains. Under one of
the windows there was a red sofa with a golden frame.
-This is definitely the place.-I said.
-Too extravagant.-outraged X.
-It is definitely better than the house up in the
desert.-said Gamma looking around with a smile. The place apparently appealed
to her.
In the room there were two doors, one through which we
had entered and another-white with golden ornaments. We passed through it and
entered a corridor that looked endless. On the walls there were different
paintings and windows but I didn’t look at them.
X and Gamma weren’t talking at all. They got into a
fight earlier because of the clothes Gamma was wearing but that was normal for
them. Was it because of the unsuitable boys Gamma usually dated, because of her
irresponsibility or because of the dissatisfaction with X’s unsuccessful
inventions, that most of the time exploded by themselves for no good reason.
At the end of the corridor there was a metal door.
Next to it was one of those things, in which you enter a password to open the
door. X went up to it and took another gadget out of one of his many pockets.
He wore clothes with a lot of pockets so that he could carry all of his
inventions.
The gadget scanned the buttons and the little screen showed
the numbers that had been used. Then it showed different varieties that could
be the password.
-We have only two shots.-said X. He looked trough all
the combinations and stopped on one –This is his birth date.-he said-Or at
least what is written in his record.-he continued unsurely. Without hesitation
he typed in the password but shortly after we heard a peep that meant it didn’t
match.
-Why do you always have to rush things?-scouted him
Gamma.-Nobody uses his birth date for a password. It is too predictable.-She
was ready to hit him again but stopped herself. It was stupid to hit her own
partner and she new it. Gamma decided to try her luck and took the gadget from
his hands. She decided what combination to use and typed it in but again we
were wrong. This time we heard a voice.
-Do you wish to use the backup password?-said a woman.
My friends looked at each other surprised.
-Yes.-answered Gamma. She was confident, but
I was not convinced that something would come of it.
-The year I met her.-said a man, probably the
criminal. I never remembered his name.
-Who?- Gamma wondered.
-You have ten seconds.- the machine warned us and an
annoying peep started to count out the seconds. X took out another gadget while
he put away the first one. He started looking trough the information for Geora,
the criminal, but couldn’t find anything. The last few seconds the peep started
to speed up and when the time passed a cage fell from the ceiling trapping us inside.
Then, out of nowhere gallons of gas started to leak.
When I woke up we were somewhere else. We still were
in the cage but in a different place. It looked like a prison or a gloomy dark
basement. My friends were still sleeping leaning against each other so I jumped
on Gamma’s face and woke her up.
-Hey, what are you doing!-she shouted at me and pushed
me on the ground.-Where are we?-she asked while looking around.
-I don’t know.-I answered. X opened his eyes and moved
uncomfortably.
-Wake up and take us out of here!-Gamma’s loud voice
pierced the darkness.
-We shouldn’t be too hasty.-he said and rubbed his
face with his palms.-He might catch us again. The two of us looked around and suddenly
there was something that caught my eyes attention an invention similar to the
one that got us in the cage. Also a lot of lasers close to the door.
-See the lasers? Even if we manage to get out of this
cage we won’t make it to the door.-said X.
-Geko will.-I said-Geko is small and jumps very high.
The two of them looked at each other and started a
conversation without talking. Gamma was in for it but X refused to listen, he
was worried. But in the end he gave up and sighed.
-Ok, go.-he said-But
be careful.
I jumped between the bars of the cage and continued to
the door and lasers. It took X years to decide and tell to me what had happened
while I was on my mission.
-You’re worried about the little frog, aren’t you?- Gamma
asked him.
-You don’t know what’s going to happen if he makes a
mistake.- X answered.
-You weren't worried for me when you pushed me into the
crater of that volcano.- she said frowning.
-That was different. I knew there was a rock down and
a cave next to it . When everything is provided
there's no need for me to worry.-he answered.
-You never worry about anything. Except for Geko.
-You're wrong. When the ones from the tribe Pap kidnapped you I was
very anxious. Scared even…-X disagreed.
-Scared? Oh, I see. Because the key was in me and the
tribe could have thoughtlessly opened the door and freed the beast Do.
-I was scared for you.-he confessed.-You never new but
I liked you for quite a long time now.-he continued and smiled bitterly. Even
when he was telling me this story he had the same smile on his face-Who am I kidding.
I don't like you. I love you.-he said without having the courage to look at
her. He is very shy. Maybe that's why it took him such a long time to confess
his feelings to her.
Gamma grasped his
chin and made him face her.
-You are kidding, right?-she asked.-This can't be
true. We’ve known each other since we were babies and you’re telling me this
now!? You`re telling me this now when we are one step away from death?!
X took her other arm that was on the ground and smiled
again remembering every great moment they had spent together.
-We’ve been close to death so many times. This has never
stopped us, right? We were wild and determined. Nobody could stop us.-he replied.
-What do you mean “we were" ?-she asked and,
smiled-We are and always will be.- Geko will free us, you'll see.
Gamma pulled his face closer and kissed him. He didn't
want to admit it, but I know, he must have stood startled until I saved
them.
While their love story was reaching its peak I passed
through the net of lasers and reached the door. With a jump I reached the
machine next to the door and looked at the numbers.
-Any ideas for the combination?-I asked.
-Yes!-answered happily Gamma.-Before I fell asleep I
saw the criminal type in the combination. It's 03012008.
I tried the combination and to my surprise the lasers
were instantly deactivated.
-It’s the first time you’ve done something useful, Gamma!-I joked and waited for X to get closer so
that I could jump on his shoulder.
When we opened the door we saw a stairway.- Gray, ugly
scarcely illuminated, just like the dungeon
which we left.
-I don't like this. I want to see the red carpet and golden
decorations again.-said Gamma
while we were going up the stairs. At the end there was a white door with
golden ornaments. On the other side lay a long two way hallway.
-Where to now?-I asked. The path looked the same on
the left as that on the right. This hallway, unlike the first one didn't have
windows but it had more paintings with inscriptions underneath.
-Left!-answered Gamma. Whenever we had to choose she chose
left. It was something about advice that her
grandmother gave her but I don't remember much about it.
X ignored her and looked at one painting as well as
its name and date. Then looked at another one and another.
-There's no time to admire them.-she scouted
him.-Let's go left!
-No.-he objected.-Right.
-Why?-she asked.
-The years on the left are newer and the ones on the
right - older. On the right, at least that's what I think, there's something
more important. An office, bedroom or something like that.-explained X.
Without any hesitation the 3 of us chose the right direction.
A double door an the end of the path proved X was right. It was golden with a
lot of ornaments. Gamma didn't stop to think before she opened the door.
It was an entrance to a hall - huge, with a
high ceiling, round and thick columns
around a dancing floor. On one of the ends close to one of the columns there was a lofty throne. There on that throne sat the criminal.
-I knew that you will get away. But I didn’t think you
were smart enough to find me.-he said.
His body was covered in black clothes and bandages
covered even his eyes.
-Is there any way you would willingly surrender
without any problems?-asked Gamma.
-I won't give up to those pigs. They ruined my
life.-he shouted and stood up, he stopped talking for a while and then sat down
again on his throne.-Do you know how this came to be? I'm not a bad person. Or
at least before I wasn't. Just a normal man. Until I met her. I fell madly in
love and I believe she is my other half. Everything was perfect when she accepted to marry me. I was in the seventh heaven of
happiness. One year had passed since we got married when I woke up in the
middle of the night in our burning bedroom. I managed to get us out of there
but she got sick badly and I burned 70% of my skin. From then on I hide under
these scars. It turned out that are policeman accidently dropped his cigarette
and they concealed the
evidence, closed the case and forgot about us. I was so mad at these pigs that
I started killing them. It took me years to find the man that did this and when
I did I killed him with a smile on my face. Me and my wife were going to live
here where it is safe but she couldn't make it. Now everything here reminds me
of her.
-Not all police officers are bad.-said X.
-They all are and deserve to die!-he shouted.
-If you don't surrender we will have to use brute
force!-said Gamma and moved her hand close to her gun.-Your story is very touching
but you have done too many bad things so we can't just let it slide.
-You'll never take me alive!-he shouted and pulled a
gun from his pocket and fired а ray of light at us. I firmly grasped X’s
shoulder, who jumped aside behind one of the columns, Gamma hid behind another one
on the other side. The two of them took out their own guns and started shooting
at the criminal but he quickly hid behind the stairs of the throne.
-This is my territory! You can't beat me!-he shouted
behind the stairs.
-Maybe there are hidden traps.-said X to Gamma.-Look
out.
-Listen to my plan. You will shoot at him from here
while I surround him from the
other side.-she explained and stood up from the ground after she took off her
boots.
-No. This is stupid.-said my friend but she didn't hear
him.-Stay here!
Gamma pretended that he had not heard him and just
waved at us without turning back.
-This girl is too reckless.-I said.
X decided to play her game and started to shoot at the
criminal by aiming at the stairs. He wasn't very good at shooting compared to
Gamma.
-I understand your pain.-he shouted to distract him.-
I also love a girl.-X shot at him and them hid behind the stairs.-And I would
go mad without her. But it is not right to kill innocent people.
-Don't pretend like you understand me!-shouted the
criminal.-You didn't lose her because of one stupid mistake! You'll never
understand what it's like.-he screamed louder.
-What would she say if she knew what you have done?-asked
my friend. The criminal stopped and didn't show up behind the stairs.-I can
tell you. She would be disappointed. I don't think that she would want you to
be a killer of innocent people.
-Don`t talk on behalf of her!-he shouted and started
to shoot unseeingly dislodging a few peaces from the column.-You don't have the
right to speak in the name of an angel!
In the same moment we heard a scream and a long rope
pulled Gamma up close to the ceiling above the ground having her head downwards.
-I told her to look out for traps-hissed X.
The criminal appeared from behind his hiding place
pushed a button close to the throne and the rope started to lower Gamma.
He went to her, turned her head up and used her as a
shield holding a gun to her back.
-Show yourself!-commanded the criminal to X.
He put me on the ground and went to him.
-Leave her alone.-pleased my friend with hands in the
air.
-Is it her?-he asked-Is she your other half?
-That's none of your business. Please, just let her
go.-entreated again X.
-If I kill her here and now you will understand what
it's like to be me, won't you? Just like that, without any reason.-said the criminal
and put his hand around her neck, squeezing it slowly not enough to suffocate
her but it changed her voice.
-X, don't worry about me.-She said -Just shoot.-I could
hardy hear
-I can't.-objected X.
-Shoot!-she shouted.
-Shut up!- the criminal scouted her - Shut up or I'll
kill you!
-X, do you remember how you saved me from the tribe
Pap?-she asked and he nodded. She nodded subtly and managed to free herself
from the grip but the criminal saw it coming and shot her in the stomach.
-Gamma!-screamed X and fell down on the ground next to
her.-Hold on. We have a first aid kit on the ship and I'll take care of the
wound. I'll teleport you to a hospital and...
- What’s the point.-she stopped him.-I won't even make
it half the way through. Leave me and go catch him.
-I don't want to!-he objected while crying.-I love you
I don't want to leave you.
His cries echoed in the hall. They didn't notice but at
that moment the criminal walked pass beside me and left.
-I love you too.-she said with a faint smile.-But you
know what I think about the unfinished cases.
-I don't care about the mission!-shouted X.
-Think of it as my last wish.-she said calmly and coughed.-Don't
forget me.-she whispered . You could easily see it was hard for her to breathe.
-Never.-he answered and bent down closer to her.
-We'll see each other in another life.-she said and X
kissed her for the last time.
For a second he just stared at her trying to memorize her
face, then he closed her eyes gently. He took his gun and slowly came to me and
kneeled.
-This is not a bad joke, is it? She wont stand up and
start laughing, right?-he asked and held out his hand.
-I'm afraid not.-I answered and jumped on his palm.
It took a lot of time to find our way to the exit. In
front of the small wooden house we saw the criminal walking to his ship. Without
hesitation X shot him in the leg and he fell on the ground.
My friend ran up to him so swiftly that I couldn't
stop myself from falling on the ground. I started jumping towards them but I
was too slow. X stopped next to him and pointed his gun to his head.
-You deserve to die.-said my friend.
-No!-I shouted.-You will turn into him!
-Now you know what it's like.-said the criminal.-Kill
me. Release me from my misery.
-You deserve to die like a dog.
-Stop!-I held him up.-What will Gamma say about this?
Wasn't her wish to catch him?-I asked. X was hesitating.-He deserves to rot in
prison instead of getting away with just a mild death.-I said.
-Do it.-whispered the man still laying on the ground. His
leg was bleeding and the sand closer to him reddened.-You don't even deserve a
bullet in the head.-said X, he took out one of his gadget from him pockets, and
threw it at the criminal. It wrapped around him forming a web and he instantly
fell asleep. Geora got a life sentence the same week.
It took a lot of years for X to start talking again. He
grieved for her all his life. I went back to Earth and decided to write their story.
Maybe then my friend will be at peace. Gamma was a warrior and died on the
battlefield as one.
